In this period he wrote his two most famous operas Nina, ossia La Pazza per Amore and La Molinara, originally entitled L’amor contrastato. He became Court Composer to Ferdinand IV of Naples and retained this appointment when Ferdinand was ousted by Joseph Bonaparte, who was succeeded by King Murat, and ultimately during the return of Ferdinand IV. Early in his career he served as Court Composer to the Empress Catherine the Great in St Petersburg from 1776–83 where he wrote a dozen operas including Il Barbiere di Siviglia for the Hermitage Theatre.
Naples was his preferred city and he wrote the bulk of his 80 or so operas there as well as much instrumental and sacred music. Giovanni Paisiello, the renowned Neapolitan composer, was born in Taranto 1740 and died in Naples 1816. Hook was highly esteemed in his day as a composer, performer and teacher and much of his work was published. His cantata The Nightingale (Track 3) was first sung in Vauxhall Gardens by the boy soprano Master Walsh. He wrote more than 2000 songs of which “The Lass of Richmond Hill” is still remembered (Track 1). Many of his operas were produced in Covent Garden, Sadler’s Wells, Drury Lane, Haymarket and Lyceum theatres between 17. He spent the greater part of his life as music director of Vauxhall Gardens for which he wrote and performed in overtures, quartets, trios and sonatas as well as numerous ballad operas. His first ballad opera was composed at eight years of age. He was a child prodigy, already performing concertos on the harpsichord at the age of six. The extremely prolific English composer James Hook was born in Norwich 1746 and died in Boulogne 1827. Giulietta e Romeo: Ombra adorata, aspetta Giannina e Bernardone: La donna che è amante La Donna di Genio Volubile: Per amar abbiamo il core Lodoiska: Ye Streams that Round my Prison Creep This is another excellent release in The Richard Bonynge Edition and a fine companion to Bonynge and Riedel’s Power of Love, an exploration of British operatic arias. With an outstanding contribution from Arcadia Lane Orchestra, it is difficult to imagine this fascinating journey into the musical byways being more persuasively presented. Whatever history’s verdict, this tuneful collection will appeal to all lovers of melody. Yet, when hearing such delightful songs and arias as ‘The Nightingale’ and the title track ‘Cherry Ripe’, it is hard to fathom the neglect of such music. Bach are seldom performed others, like Storace, Zingarelli and Crescentini are virtually forgotten. Some of the composers, such as Arne, Cimarosa and J.C. Featuring Australian soprano Deborah Riedel, the program includes many pieces never before recorded. In his latest venture, Cherry Ripe, he has gathered enchanting pieces from the 18th and 19th centuries that will captivate us all. The esteemed Australian conductor Richard Bonynge has spent a lifetime unearthing vocal treasures the world had lost or thought it had outgrown. Take me to the bidge!!
